After a long-haul flight, the quickest way to feel human again is a gentle massage that eases the stiffness through your back, hips and legs and gets your circulation moving after hours of sitting still. I’m Mei, an independent female massage therapist in Dubai, and I come to your hotel or home, often the same day, from AED 400 an hour.
What hours in a plane seat do to your body
Sitting still in a cramped seat for eight, twelve or sixteen hours asks a lot of your body. Your spine stays compressed, your hips and hamstrings shorten and tighten, and your neck and shoulders stiffen from sleeping upright at odd angles. Fluid pools in your lower legs with gravity, which is why ankles and feet often feel puffy by the time you land. The dry cabin air leaves you dehydrated on top of it all.
This is the physical, stiff-and-achy side of flying — separate from the body-clock tiredness of jet-lag. It’s the “I can’t quite stand up straight” feeling, the heavy legs, the tight lower back. On top of it, the low cabin pressure and dehydration can leave muscles feeling tighter and joints stiffer than usual. None of it is dangerous — it’s the ordinary toll of long-distance travel — but it’s real, and it’s why so many people feel wrecked for a day or two after a big trip when they don’t have to. That’s exactly what a good post-flight massage is for.
The best massage after flying
After a long flight I keep things gentle. Your body is stiff and dehydrated, so this isn’t the moment for intense deep-tissue work — a lighter, flushing, relaxing session serves you far better.
Lymphatic drainage uses light, rhythmic strokes to encourage the fluid that has pooled in your legs to move along, which eases that puffy, heavy feeling. To be honest about it: it isn’t a detox and it isn’t weight loss — it’s gentle relief for tired, swollen-feeling legs.
Swedish and relaxation massage loosens the general stiffness through your back, hips and shoulders and helps your whole system unwind after the stress of travel. For most people arriving in Dubai, a blend of the two is ideal, and I’ll adjust as we go. If you’re not sure which you need, don’t overthink it — tell me how you feel when I arrive and I’ll blend the two on the day.
Puffy ankles and heavy legs — and when to see a doctor
Mild puffiness in both ankles after a long flight is common and usually settles within a day or two, especially once you’re moving and hydrating again. Gentle massage can help it along.
There’s one thing to take seriously, though. If one calf or leg becomes swollen, warm, red or painful, or you feel breathless or have chest pain, do not have a massage — see a doctor urgently, as these can be signs of a blood clot. It’s rare, but it matters. The same goes if the swelling doesn’t settle after a day or two of moving about and rehydrating, or if it keeps coming back — that’s worth a word with your doctor rather than more massage. I go into this in more detail on my guide to massage for swollen legs and feet in Dubai.
If it’s jet-lag you’re fighting
This page is about the stiff, achy body. If your real struggle is the time difference — waking at 3am, foggy afternoons, a scrambled body clock — that’s a different thing, and I cover it in my guide to massage for jet-lag in Dubai. Many travellers have both at once, and a gentle evening session can ease the stiffness while helping you wind down for a proper night’s sleep.
What a post-flight session feels like
After a flight I keep the whole thing gentle and unhurried — this isn’t the moment for anyone to dig into knots. I’ll usually start with your back and shoulders to unwind the stiffness of sitting hunched, then move to the hips and legs with lighter, flowing strokes that help ease the puffy, heavy feeling and leave you loose rather than tender. Most people find it relaxing to the point of nearly falling asleep, which after a red-eye is no bad thing.
I bring everything with me — a proper table, oils and towels — so there’s nothing for you to prepare beyond clearing a little space. I work strictly professionally with proper draping throughout, for both women and men, so you can simply switch off and let the journey melt away.
For frequent flyers and business travellers
Dubai is a hub, and a lot of the people I see are in and out of DXB constantly — long-haul every few weeks, wheels-down and straight into meetings. If that’s you, a gentle massage soon after landing is one of the simplest ways to arrive sharp rather than stiff. Some regular travellers book me the evening they land as a matter of routine, others the morning after a red-eye before the day starts.
Because it’s a home or hotel visit, it fits around a packed schedule — no clinic to find, no traffic to sit in after a long flight, no waiting room. You choose the time that suits your itinerary, right down to a late finish, since I work until 23:00. Just message me your hotel and timing, and I’ll come to you.
Same-day, at your hotel
I come to hotels, serviced apartments and homes right across Dubai — Marina, Downtown, Business Bay, the Palm, JBR and beyond — daily from 10:00 to 23:00, and often same-day. You’ve just travelled; the last thing you want is to go out again. I bring the table, oils and towels to your room, and I work strictly professionally with proper draping throughout, for both women and men.
Whether you’re passing through for a night or moving into a new apartment after relocating to Dubai, I can usually fit you in. Message me on WhatsApp with your hotel and arrival time and I’ll come to you.
A few things that help before I arrive
You don’t need to do anything special, but these small habits make the session more effective and help you recover from the flight faster:
- Rehydrate — a glass or two of water before and after eases that dried-out, cabin-air feeling.
- Have a warm shower if you can — it loosens stiff muscles before we start.
- Move about a little — a short walk once you land gets your circulation going.
- Put your feet up for a few minutes to let any ankle puffiness settle.
- Wear something loose and comfortable to change into afterwards.
What it costs and how to book
Clear and simple: a home or hotel visit is AED 400 per hour, and my studio is AED 300 per hour, for 60, 90 or 120 minutes at the same hourly rate. No deposit, cash on the day (bank transfer on request). The full breakdown is on my pricing page.
When you’ve landed and settled in, send me a message on WhatsApp and I’ll come and help you shake off the flight.
Frequently asked questions
What massage is best after a long flight to Dubai?
A blend of gentle lymphatic drainage and Swedish relaxation works well — the lymphatic side eases puffy, heavy legs from sitting still, and the Swedish side loosens the stiff back, hips and shoulders. I keep it gentle rather than deep after flying. A hotel or home visit is AED 400 an hour, often same-day.
Can you come to my hotel in Dubai after I land?
Yes. I visit hotels and serviced apartments across Dubai, as well as homes, daily from 10:00 to 23:00 and often same-day. Message me your hotel and roughly when you'll be settled, and I'll bring the table, oils and towels to your room. No deposit, cash on the day (bank transfer on request).
Is massage after a long flight different from jet-lag massage?
They overlap but aren't the same. This is about the stiff, achy, puffy body from hours in a seat. Jet-lag is more about your body clock and sleep — I cover that separately in my jet-lag massage guide. If you have both, a gentle evening session can help the stiffness and help you wind down.
Will a massage help swollen ankles after flying?
Gentle lymphatic massage can ease the mild, both-sided puffiness many people get after a long flight by encouraging fluid to move. It isn't a medical treatment. If one calf is swollen, warm, red or painful, or you feel breathless, skip the massage and see a doctor urgently, as that needs checking.
How soon after landing can I have a massage?
Whenever you feel ready — some people like one the evening they land, others the next morning once they've showered and rehydrated. There's no rush. Have some water first, and let me know your timing on WhatsApp so I can fit you in around your arrival.
