If you lift regularly, a blend of deep-tissue and sports work is usually the best fit. It eases the tight spots heavy training leaves behind — upper back, hips, forearms, calves — supports recovery between sessions and helps you move more freely under the bar. I’m Mei, an independent female massage therapist in Dubai, and I come to your home or hotel from AED 400 an hour.
Why lifters carry so much tension
Progressive overload is the whole point of strength training, but it leaves a mark. Every heavy set creates tiny amounts of muscle damage that your body repairs a little stronger — that’s how you grow. In between, the same muscles shorten and grip: the mid-back after squats and deadlifts, the lats and chest after pressing, the hips and glutes after leg day, the forearms after anything with a barbell.
Add long evening sessions after a full workday, and most lifters I see are carrying weeks of accumulated stiffness. It’s rarely one clear injury. It’s a general tightness that quietly limits your depth in a squat, your lockout overhead, or how well you sleep. Left alone it nags; worked through properly, it eases and you move better.
Deep tissue or sports massage — which do lifters need?
Honestly, most people benefit from a blend, and I’ll mix the two in a single session based on what your body is telling me.
Deep-tissue massage is the slow, firm work that gets into stubborn knots and chronically tight bands — the traps that never switch off, the glutes and hip flexors that seize after squats. It’s methodical and specific, and it’s what you want when a particular area has been tight for weeks.
Sports and recovery massage is broader and more dynamic. It works with the muscles you actually train, helps flush that heavy-legged feeling after a hard session and keeps your range of movement where you want it. If you’re prepping for a powerlifting meet, a Hyrox race or simply chasing a PB, this is the side I lean into.
You don’t have to choose in advance. Tell me what you train and where you feel it, and I’ll build the session around that.
The tight spots I see most in lifters
A few areas come up again and again, and it helps to know what to point me towards:
- Upper back and traps: they take the load in almost every lift and rarely switch off, especially if you sit at a desk the rest of the day.
- Hips, glutes and hip flexors: heavy squats and deadlifts leave these deep and tight, which shows up as a shallow squat or a cranky lower back.
- Forearms and grip: deadlifts, rows and carries load the forearms hard, and they’re almost always skipped.
- Calves and hamstrings: that heavy-legged, stiff feeling after a leg session.
- Chest and front of the shoulders: pressing volume pulls you forward and tightens the front, which then nags the shoulders.
You don’t need to diagnose yourself — just tell me where you feel it and I’ll work it through.
Timing your massage around training
This is the question I’m asked most. A few practical pointers:
- After your heaviest session: a slower, deeper session that evening or the next day helps sore muscles settle and eases delayed soreness.
- On a rest day: ideal for deep work, because you’re not asking the muscle to perform straight afterwards.
- Before a big lift or competition: keep it lighter and mobility-focused. I’d avoid very deep work in the 24 hours before a max attempt, as muscles can feel a little tender the next day.
If you train most days, one session a week or fortnight around your hardest days is plenty for most lifters. For a rough guide, my massage frequency calculator gives you a sensible starting point. If you’re not sure how to fit it in, message me on WhatsApp with your weekly split and I’ll suggest when to book.
Will massage help me move better under the bar?
It’s a fair question, so here’s an honest answer. Massage won’t add kilos to your total on its own, and it’s no substitute for mobility drills, a proper warm-up or good coaching. What it can do is ease the tight tissue that quietly limits you: loosen a locked-up mid-back and your overhead position feels less of a fight; ease stubborn hips and the bottom of your squat often feels more comfortable; free up tight lats and your shoulders sit better in a press.
The lifters who get the most from it treat it as maintenance, not rescue. A regular session stops small niggles turning into the kind of tightness that forces a deload or a week off the bar. You still do your mobility work and your warm-ups — the massage simply clears some of the accumulated tension so those efforts land better. Think of it as looking after the engine rather than chasing the numbers.
One honest caveat: if you’re carrying an actual injury rather than everyday tightness — a joint that gives way, sharp or radiating pain, pins and needles — see a doctor or physiotherapist first. Massage works alongside proper care, not instead of it.
What a session with me looks like
I’m an independent, experienced female therapist and I work strictly professionally — proper draping throughout, by appointment, for both women and men. I bring a proper table, oils and towels, so all you need is a bit of floor space and somewhere to relax afterwards.
We’ll start by talking through your training, any niggles and the areas to prioritise. I’ll adjust pressure as we go — firm and specific where you need it, never fighting the muscle. Recovery is more than an hour on the table, too: consistent sleep, staying hydrated, a proper warm-up and the odd deload week all matter. Think of the massage as one useful part of keeping you training comfortably, not a shortcut around the basics. It’s also worth telling me about any old injuries or niggles that flare up, so I can work around them, ease off where needed and spend the time where it’ll do you the most good.
I cover most of Dubai for home visits — Marina, JLT, Business Bay, Downtown, the Palm, Dubai Hills, Dubai Sports City and more — plus hotels and serviced apartments. If you’re closer to my studio, that’s the lower-cost option.
What it costs
No packages, no membership, no deposit. A home visit is AED 400 per hour; my studio is AED 300 per hour. You choose 60, 90 or 120 minutes at the same hourly rate, and pay cash on the day (bank transfer on request). Most lifters go for 90 minutes so we can cover legs, back and arms without rushing. Everything is laid out on my pricing page.
Book your recovery massage
If heavy training has left you tight and you want to move — and lift — more freely, let’s sort it out. Message me on WhatsApp, tell me what you train and where it’s sore, and I’ll suggest the right blend and length, then come to you.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best massage for weightlifters in Dubai?
For most lifters a blend of deep-tissue and sports massage works best. It eases the tight upper back, hips and forearms that heavy training leaves behind and supports recovery between sessions. I come to you from AED 400 an hour, or AED 300 at my studio. Message me and I'll tailor it to your programme.
Should I get a massage before or after lifting?
Both have a place. A lighter, mobility-focused session before a big day helps you move freely; a slower deep-tissue session after helps sore muscles settle. If you train most days, I'd book on a rest day or the evening after your heaviest session for the deeper work.
Will deep-tissue massage affect my strength or gains?
A sensible session won't set you back — it's part of looking after the body that lifts. I'd just avoid very deep work in the 24 hours before a max attempt or competition, since muscles can feel tender afterwards. Around normal training it supports recovery rather than hindering it.
How much is a sports recovery massage at home in Dubai?
A home visit is AED 400 per hour and my studio is AED 300 per hour, for 60, 90 or 120 minutes at the same hourly rate. There's no deposit and payment is cash (bank transfer on request). Lifters often find 90 minutes ideal to cover legs, back and arms properly.
Do you come to Dubai Sports City and JLT for gym recovery massage?
Yes. I cover most of Dubai for home and hotel visits, including Dubai Sports City, JLT, Marina, Business Bay and Downtown. Finish your session, get cleaned up, and I'll come to your flat so there's no drive home afterwards. Send me your area on WhatsApp and I'll confirm timing.
