Quick relief for a stiff neck: 3 self-massage moves you can do at your desk
A stiff, achy neck from screen time? Here are three simple self-massage and stretch moves you can do right now — no equipment, takes two minutes.

If your neck feels stiff and tender by the afternoon — especially the muscles running from the base of your skull down to your shoulders — you’re feeling the cost of looking at a screen all day. Here are three things you can do right now to ease it.
Work gently. None of this should be sharp or painful; think “firm but comfortable.”
1. Loosen the base of your skull
Tension headaches and neck stiffness often start at the suboccipital muscles — the small muscles where your skull meets your neck.
- Place your fingertips at the base of your skull, just either side of the spine.
- Press in gently and make small, slow circles for 30–45 seconds.
- Slowly nod your head “yes” a few times while you keep light pressure.
2. Release the top of your shoulders
The upper trapezius — the muscle that runs from your neck to the tip of your shoulder — gets tight and lifts toward your ears when you’re stressed or typing.
- Reach across with the opposite hand and gently squeeze the meaty ridge on top of your shoulder.
- Squeeze and release slowly, 8–10 times, working from the neck outward.
- Let your shoulder drop and relax as you do it.
3. A simple neck stretch
- Sit tall. Gently drop your right ear toward your right shoulder until you feel a comfortable stretch on the left side of your neck.
- For a little more, rest your right hand lightly on the side of your head — no pulling, just the weight of your hand.
- Hold 20–30 seconds, breathe, then switch sides.
Keep it from coming back
- Raise your screen so the top is at eye level.
- Every 45 minutes, roll your shoulders and look away from the screen.
- Stay hydrated — tight muscles love water.
These moves help in the moment. If the stiffness keeps returning week after week, the deeper bands of tension usually need focused, hands-on work to fully release — that’s exactly what a deep tissue session is for, and I can come to your home or office anywhere in Dubai.
