Should You Book Massage Before or After a Spray Tan?

By Mei Han, massage therapist in Dubai Updated 22 October 2026

Short answer

Book your massage before your spray tan when you can, leaving time to wash off massage products and meet the tanning provider’s preparation instructions. If the tan is already applied, finish its development and rinse schedule before considering another appointment.

Book massage before your spray tan when possible, leaving enough time to wash off massage products and follow the tanning provider’s preparation instructions. If your tan has already been applied, complete its development and rinse schedule before considering massage. When keeping an even colour for an event matters most, move the massage earlier or save it until afterwards.

Which appointment should come first?

My practical preference is massage first, tanning later, with a proper gap for the tanning preparation you have been given. That sequence avoids placing an oil-based, hands-on appointment inside the period when a fresh tan needs to be left alone. It is a scheduling recommendation, not a universal number of hours that applies to every product.

I’m Mei, an independent female massage therapist in Dubai. I provide strictly professional massage for both women and men, by appointment, with proper draping. I do not apply spray tans or provide a tanning service, so the person applying your tan should decide its preparation, rinse and maintenance instructions.

The main conflict is straightforward: massage involves skin contact, products and resting against linens, while a tanning appointment may require clean skin and a period without washing or rubbing. A plan that respects one appointment can therefore interfere with the other. Choosing the order before booking is easier than trying to adapt a massage around fresh colour.

Your diaryMy suggested decision
Neither appointment is bookedPut massage first and allow the required preparation gap
Tan is applied and still developingKeep that period free of massage and follow its rinse instructions
Tan is developed, with no important event imminentAsk about product compatibility and accept that appearance may change
A fresh, even tan is essential for an eventMove massage before tanning or until after the event

A shorter massage does not remove the contact conflict. Nor does changing from one massage style to another establish that the tan will stay unchanged. If the appointments cannot be arranged without uncertainty, choose which result matters more that day rather than trying to promise both.

How do you plan massage before tanning?

Work backwards from the tanning provider’s instructions, then place the massage where you can finish it, wash appropriately and arrive prepared. Do not schedule the tan immediately after massage merely because the two addresses are close. The gap must serve a practical purpose, not just cover travel.

St.Tropez’s preparation guidance describes clean skin without certain products immediately before tanning, while giving separate advice for dry areas. That illustrates why “moisturise first” is too vague on its own. Follow the directions for the actual tan being used rather than combine fragments of advice from several brands.

Ask the tanning provider what skin preparation they require after an earlier massage. Explain that the massage may use oil, and ask when and how they want that removed. If the instructions leave you needing a rushed shower between appointments, spread the bookings further apart or use separate days.

The guide to showering after massage covers ordinary comfort and washing. Here, the timing has another purpose: meeting the tanning preparation requirements. You do not need to keep massage oil on your skin at the expense of those instructions to make the massage worthwhile.

Build the sequence in this order:

  1. Get the tanning preparation and development instructions for your chosen product.
  2. Decide whether massage fits before the required preparation begins.
  3. Allow time to finish the massage, wash and change without rushing.
  4. Confirm the tanning appointment only when that sequence is workable.
  5. Leave later activities compatible with the tan’s development period.

If you are also planning hair removal, treat that as its own appointment with its own skin aftercare. The massage-after-waxing guide addresses freshly waxed skin. Fitting three treatments into a small gap is not automatically a better preparation plan, particularly if the skin becomes sore or irritated.

What if your spray tan is already applied?

If it is still developing or has not reached the instructed rinse point, postpone massage. Keep following the provider’s directions rather than washing early to fit a booking or asking for a full-body session with no contact on the tan. A body massage cannot deliver its normal purpose while avoiding the skin almost everywhere.

After the instructed rinse, ask the tanning provider about massage products and friction if preserving the finish matters to you. A completed rinse is a stage in the tanning instructions, not a guarantee against every later change in colour. I would not promise that a massage will leave a fresh tan exactly as it was.

Product instructions differ. For example, Bondi Sands’ Light/Medium salon solution provides its own wash-off directions. That example should not be used as a waiting time for another formula, and a bottle labelled “express” should still be followed according to its particular instructions.

Send your tanning and massage dates on WhatsApp. Include whether the tan is planned, developing or already rinsed, and whether there is an event you are preparing for. That gives us enough context to choose a sensible order before discussing the massage slot.

Avoid relying on “oil-free” as a complete solution. Contact, draping, position changes and clothing remain part of the visit, and product availability should be checked rather than assumed. If protecting the tan requires a substantially different appointment from the massage you want, moving the date is the clearer choice.

If the skin is irritated, itchy, broken or unusually sore, separate that issue from the cosmetic result. Do not massage a reaction to see whether it settles. Seek advice from the tanning provider and an appropriate healthcare professional when needed before adding another skin-contact treatment.

How should you plan for an event or holiday?

Choose the event priority first: the massage experience, the tanning result or a relaxed preparation day. You can want all three, but a crowded diary may force a compromise. Putting massage earlier usually makes that compromise easier because the tan can then follow its own preparation and development sequence.

For a wedding or photographed occasion, work backwards from when you need to be ready rather than forwards from the first available appointment. Let the tanning provider set their recommended event timing. Place the massage before that preparation window or after the occasion, instead of inventing a universal wedding-week timetable.

For a holiday in Dubai, consider the activities around the appointments. Swimming, showers, outdoor time and changing clothes may each affect the tanning plan according to the product instructions. Booking a home or hotel massage removes a journey, but it does not remove the contact and product considerations.

A hotel room can make washing and changing convenient, yet convenience should not become a reason to overlap incompatible instructions. Check when you can use the bathroom, whether you have time before dinner and whether the tanning provider expects anything specific after rinsing. Keep the appointment sequence simple enough to follow without watching the clock throughout.

If you have already booked both in the opposite order, contact the providers before the day. Moving one appointment may be easier than redesigning the massage around protecting every visible patch of colour. Do not assume that paying for a longer session will create a workaround.

How do you arrange the massage in Dubai?

For a straightforward relaxation goal, discuss Swedish and relaxation massage. Tell me which body areas you want to focus on and the relevant tanning schedule. The booking decision is about whether that ordinary massage fits the diary, not about finding a supposed tan-proof technique.

At home, I use your bed with a massage blanket and fresh linens; the studio has a large client bed. Hotel visits use the same home-visit approach, subject to the hotel’s visitor arrangements. There is no need to prepare special tanning equipment for the massage, and I do not provide salon aftercare products.

Home and hotel visits cost AED 400 per hour, while studio appointments cost AED 300 per hour. Sessions are 60, 90 or 120 minutes, with no deposit and payment in cash, with bank transfer on request. The pricing page lists all duration totals; appointments are available daily from 10:00–23:00 by appointment.

Send your Dubai area, preferred setting, massage length and the tan’s application and rinse plans. If you are unsure of the latter, obtain them before confirming a slot that depends on them. A clear sequence is more valuable than a guessed waiting period.

Message me on WhatsApp to plan the massage around your tan. My first suggestion will be massage before tanning with enough time for proper preparation, or a later appointment when protecting fresh colour no longer dictates the session.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get a massage before or after a spray tan in Dubai?

Massage before tanning is usually the simpler sequence, with enough time to wash off massage products and follow the tanning provider’s preparation instructions. If the tan is already applied, respect its development and rinse schedule. Message me on WhatsApp with both appointment dates before confirming the massage time.

How many hours after a spray tan can I have a massage?

There is no single interval that covers every tanning formula and desired result. Complete the product’s instructed development and rinse steps, then ask the tanning provider about massage products and friction. WhatsApp me with those instructions; if preserving fresh colour for an event is essential, move the massage until afterwards.

Will massage oil ruin my spray tan?

I cannot promise that massage products and rubbing will leave a fresh tan unchanged. Ask your tanning provider about the actual formula and its aftercare, and consider massage before tanning when possible. Message me on WhatsApp to plan the order rather than rely on a different massage style to protect the colour.

How much does the massage cost when planning around a tan?

Home and hotel massage costs AED 400 per hour, and studio massage costs AED 300 per hour. Sessions last 60, 90 or 120 minutes, with no deposit and cash payment or bank transfer on request. These prices cover massage only; tanning is a separate service arranged with your chosen provider.
