Is massage safe during pregnancy? A Dubai mum-to-be's guide
Pregnancy brings real aches — and a lot of careful questions. Here's a clear, reassuring guide to prenatal massage: when it helps, what to expect, and how to stay safe.
Pregnancy is wonderful and exhausting in equal measure. As your body changes, your lower back, hips and shoulders often carry the strain — and far from home, without your usual support network, it can feel like a lot. A common question I’m asked is simply: is massage safe while I’m pregnant?
The short answer: yes, when it’s done properly, by someone who understands prenatal care — and it can be a real comfort.
When prenatal massage helps
Gentle, well-positioned massage during pregnancy can ease:
- Lower-back and hip ache as your posture shifts
- Tight, tired shoulders and neck
- Swelling in the legs and feet
- Sleep that’s become difficult and broken
- General stress and tension
Most expecting mums find it most welcome in the second and third trimesters, when the aches build up.
Staying safe — the sensible rules
A few principles keep prenatal massage safe and comfortable:
- Positioning matters. From the second trimester on, you’ll be comfortably supported on your side with cushions, never flat on your stomach, and not flat on your back for long.
- Pressure is adapted. Certain points and very deep work are avoided; the focus is on gentle, soothing relief.
- Your doctor comes first. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, high blood pressure, a history of clots, or any complication, please check with your doctor or midwife before booking. If anything feels off, we don’t proceed.
- Tell me everything. How many weeks you are, how you’re feeling, any conditions — the more I know, the safer and more comfortable your session.
What a home visit looks like
For most mums, a home visit is the easiest choice — no getting dressed and driving across Dubai when you’re already tired. I bring everything: a professional table, plenty of cushions for support, fresh linens and gentle oils. You don’t prepare a thing.
The session is calm and unhurried. It’s an hour to stop, be looked after, and let some of the weight ease off — physically and otherwise.
After the baby arrives
The care doesn’t stop at birth. Postnatal massage can help with the aches of feeding and carrying, support recovery, and give new mums a rare, restorative hour to themselves during the demanding “fourth trimester.”
If you’re expecting or newly a mum anywhere in Dubai — from Palm Jumeirah to Downtown — and you’d like gentle, professional care at home, message me and tell me how far along you are. I’ll take it from there.
